The sun shone, having no alternative, on the nothing new. —Samuel Beckett, Murphy (1938)

American Book Review make a top 100 list, of the best first lines from novel. Ranking #1 is Call me Ishmael. —Herman Melville, Moby Dick (1851).  My favorite line, although it’s not the first scentce in the story itself, but it is the first scentence of the Note from the Author, well my favorit is “Imagine you were abducted by aliens and taken away to their home planet” -Louis Sachar, The Cardturner (2010)
