Classic Books on Summer Reading?

As I was looking through the Summer Reading list from the local school district, I noticed one thing that it was lacking. Classics, there were very few and most of them were for AP or honor classes. Classics like Of Mice and Men, Great Expectations , Nineteen Eighty-Four or Animal Farm, Pride and Prejudice, Lord of the Flies, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, Beowulf, The Iliad , The Odyssey, To Kill a Mockingbird, and Moby Dick. Instead they are replaced by books like Ender’s Game, Dan Brown, The House on Mango Street, Death Be Not Proud, Dreamland, Maximum Ride Series, A Lesson Before Dying, Crank, The God of Small Things, Mists of Avalon, The Lovely Bones, Dean Koontz, An American Childhood, and The Namesake.

What do you think a summer reading list should consist of?
